The WIKI thing!

The introductory video was very helpful and easy to follow. I can see how wikis could be very useful in variety of situations. As a teacher, I need to reflect how I might be able to use it and also encourage students to use it in group projects.

As for the family meal, I've been hankering for a long time for some chocolate eclairs, so let's have a taste test!

Photo Sharing

Being a 'budding' gardener, I thought I'd send the Library Lady a rose - ok, so I'm probably breaking some social norm here. In any event, the tags were: rose, beautiful and wallpaper. Well, we were told there would be some weird ones!

I am accustomed to using another photo software package for editing, so I'm relunctant to switch and in the process get myself confused. That being said, it seems Picassa is fairly user-friendly with some useful search and editing features. Also, of course, there is the fact that it is stored in the cloud which serves as a valuable back-up. Oh buy, I'm almost talking myself into switching!

Twittering

Well, I set up an account which was not too difficult. I decided to follow a number of sites including the BPL which seems to have had its last posting on 21 July - is that correct? In any event, I also posted a tweet and that showed up on my screen, but who knows where else! To be honest, I do not really understand how one keeps updated with Twitter other than by going to their website and scrolling all the responses that others have posted to that individual, which seems quite tedious.

Although I am somewhat leery of social networking generally, "the jury is still out" until I become more acquainted with the various protocols.

Tagging

Well, what they think of next? Although I watched the videos, I then went on vacation for a week and forgot everything.....note to self - start a task and stick without until one of you cracks!

I added one travel website - hotwire.com .   It is a fairly user-friendly site that offers low prices in higher market hotels in areas of a city & at service levels that you select. However, you don't learn the actual name of the hotel until you paid! I tagged this with travel, hotels, discounts.

The other site related to exchanging homes - http://www.homeexchange.com/ . This is an established organization that facilitates people exchanging their houses with others, usually in a different country. I tagged this site with worldwide, home, exchange.

I can see the value of Diigo when one is unable to use one's own computer since one can store this kind of information for perusing later - I could see myself using it.

Interesting videos.......

I have always been interested in the videos posted by TED. This is a nonprofit devoted to 'ideas worth spreading'. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design..  Below are a couple of videos that may be of interest to some of you.

Hans Rosling, an expert on global health, is one of the most watched presenters. Here is one of his presentations that may be of interest to you:

If you should happen to be a maths teacher - this video is so innovative and the way education is going to use this media. It's also amusing too!

I have visited various web2 sites, but am not really familiar with how they work or how to use them ....... so, I'd say 4 out of 10  -  I'm looking forward to the course!
